BAN THE BUTT - PACIFIC GROVE!

We are encouraging all Monterey County cities to pass a Ban The Butt ordinance, starting with Pacific Grove. We are asking Pacific Grove City Council to pass a citywide Ban The Butt ordinance, similar to ones in Santa Cruz County.
Cigarette butts are the top items found at Surfrider beach cleanups and a NOAA and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary analysis of shoreline cleanup data documented 231,735 cigarette butts, representing over 23% of all items collected over the course of the study making cigarette butts the single largest individual category of debris. We need to stop this litter at the source. A ban on the retail sales of tobacco products with a butt or plastic tip would help solve the problem.

BLUE WATER TASK FORCE WATER QUALITY MONITORING RESULTS

Our Blue Water Task Force team processed our latest water samples, and we have a quick breakdown:
🟢 THE GOOD: It’s an ALL GREEN sweep for almost every beach across the bay! Safe, clear, and ready for your ocean adventures.
🔴 THE HEADS UP: Lover’s Point tested in the RED (high bacteria levels). We recommend steering clear of the water at Lover's Point for now while the ecosystem flushes out.
Our volunteer citizen scientists test these spots regularly so you always know what’s happening in the water before you dive in. 🔬💙

Beaches and coastal areas across the nation have been in a near constant state of emergency in 2026. As these “emergencies” become more common along our shores, the state policy frameworks developed to allow emergency armoring to protect life and property in coastal areas are unintentionally contributing to the permanent loss of our beaches by enabling temporary emergency armoring to become permanent structures.
