Beach Clean-Ups

Enjoy our beautiful coastline and help keep it clean through our monthly beach clean-ups

Start your day changing the ocean’s future! We host monthly beach clean-ups at rotating beaches, typically from 10AM - 12PM on the fourth Saturday of each month*. We also offer a free beach yoga session at 9AM so feel free to come early so you can feel good before doing good.

All are welcome and all the supplies will be provided. Look for our Surfrider table to check-in. Scroll down for the schedule and FAQs.

*Please note while most cleanups are on Saturdays, our April clean-up will be on a Sunday to not conflict with Carmel-by-the-Sea's Earth Day and Arbor Day event

2025 Calendar with Jan Location Change Surfrider-Monterey_Beach-Cleanup-2025-digital-post-ALL-02

Please note our January clean-up is moving from Moss Landing to Fort Ord Dunes State Park out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our volunteers following the recent battery plant fire. While we hope the area is safe, and know air quality is back tomorrow, there still lies some uncertainty on surface-level impacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

DO I NEED TO SIGN UP AHEAD OF TIME?

Registering in advance is encouraged as it speeds up the check-in process during the beach cleanup. If you do not register in advance, a QR code will be available at check-in.

CAN I BRING MY KIDS, FRIENDS OR A GROUP?

Yes. For groups of 20+, please email chair@monterey.surfrider.org or call 831-242-0132 and let us know how many you expect. Please read through the rest of the FAQ’s below before reaching out. Kids of all ages are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. We cannot watch anyone once they are dropped off or cleaning the beach.

WHAT DO YOU PROVIDE?

We provide bags, gloves, tabulating sheets (to keep longitudinal track of litter data), and hand sanitizer.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

We recommend bringing a hat, sunblock, and water (in a reusable bottle, of course!). If you have work gloves and a bucket or reusable bag you don't mind filling with trash, bring them along too!

DO I HAVE TO STAY THE WHOLE TWO HOURS?

Not at all, any amount of time you can donate is appreciated.

CAN YOU SIGN MY VOLUNTEER HOURS SHEET?

We would love to…but you MUST show us that you participated.

DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR PARKING?

Possibly, depending on the cleanup location. Check out the Golden Event links above for site-specific details.

DO YOUR BEACH CLEANUPS CHANGE LOCATIONS?

Yes, we are moving our beach cleanups around quite a bit to include all of Monterey County. Always check the locations here or on Facebook/Instagram before heading out to the cleanup.

DO YOU EVER CANCEL OR RESCHEDULE A BEACH CLEANUP DUE TO THE WEATHER?

Our Beach Clean Ups are rarely canceled due to weather. Should such be the case, it will be posted on our website, Instagram, Facebook and an email will be sent to everyone who has registered for the clean up.
