Surfrider Monterey Chapter Hosts Regional Surfrider Foundation Conference
On February 28 to March 2, 2025, Surfrider volunteers, chapter leaders, and student activists from across California gathered at the breathtaking Asilomar Conference Grounds in Monterey Bay. Against the stunning backdrop of our coastal sanctuary, attendees came together for a weekend of education, collaboration, and inspiration, united by a shared commitment to protect our ocean, waves, and beaches.

A Weekend of Connection and Learning
As the host chapter, Surfrider Monterey was honored to welcome passionate coastal defenders to our shores. The weekend was packed with insightful talks and hands-on workshops, covering everything from clean water initiatives to plastic pollution reduction, climate action, and the growing threats of coastal erosion and wildfires.
One of the most engaging moments came from Surfrider Foundation CEO Chad Nelsen, who kicked off the conference with a powerful keynote. With a lifelong history of ocean advocacy, Chad provided a deep dive into the organization’s mission, successes, and the challenges ahead. He reminded us that while the fight to protect our coasts is ongoing, our collective impact is undeniable. Together, we truly make a difference.
Spotlight on Advocacy and Action
The event also featured Jennifer Savage, Associate Director of California Policy, who spoke about the California Coastal Act and its critical role in ensuring public beach access and coastal protection for future generations. Justin Cummings, Chair of the California Coastal Commission, addressed the evolving political climate, detailing the commission’s work in the wake of the devastating Malibu and Palisades wildfires. His presentation underscored the urgent need for stronger environmental protections as climate change accelerates coastal erosion and extreme weather events.
The conference wrapped up with an inspiring session led by Carolyn Curtin and Ryan Cruse, who offered a comprehensive look at Surfrider’s Student Club Network. With over 163 student clubs nationwide and 35 student leaders present at the conference, the future of ocean advocacy is in good hands. The enthusiasm and dedication of these young leaders reinforced a central theme of the weekend: education and empowerment drive lasting change.
Key Takeaways: The Power of a Unified Movement
One of the biggest takeaways from the conference was the incredible infrastructure and support Surfrider provides to its chapters and members. The organization equips volunteers with leadership opportunities, advocacy tools, and action-oriented programs, a true testament to the strength of this movement.
It was also a powerful reminder that meeting face-to-face, sharing knowledge, and working together makes our efforts stronger. Whether through local campaigns, policy advocacy, or beach cleanups, our ability to collaborate fuels real, measurable impact.
